Our Services

We provide compassionate, quality home infusion care using a multidisciplinary approach, and the most effective and efficient utilization of resources to achieve the best patient outcomes. Home Infusion Therapy provides IV therapy and nutrition, such as chemotherapy, pain management and antibiotic therapy in the patient's home.
 
We provide certified home health services for adult and pediatric patients needing nursing, rehabilitation (physical, occupational and/or speech language pathology therapies) and home health aides. When medically necessary, our services help patients adapt and recover from illness or injury in the comfort of their home.
 
We care for patients who are seeking palliative end of life care. We provide care designed to manage symptoms and provide emotional and spiritual support. Care can be provided in the home, at an assisted living facility or in nursing homes. We also provide care in our inpatient care facilities, Duke Hospice at the Meadowlands in Hillsborough and Hock Family Pavilion in Durham.
 
Bereavement care is provided to primary caregivers/family members of Hospice patients for up to 13 months following the death of a loved one. We also offer bereavement services to anyone in our community who has suffered a loss due to death or who requires critical incident debriefing.

Who Are Our Volunteers?

  • Volunteers are people with big hearts, willing to give of themselves
  • Volunteers are people of all ages and backgrounds who desire to help others
  • Volunteers share their time and bring their own individual interests, skills, talents and experience to our program

What opportunities are available for volunteering?

There are a variety of ways for volunteers to assist our patients and their families including but not limited to:
  • Hospice (in-home) patient/family support
  • Duke Hospice at the Meadowlands Inpatient Facility
  • Hock Family Pavilion
  • Fund-raising and special events
  • Camp ReLEAF
  • Administrative and office support
 
There are many opportunties to volunteer for hospice that are appropriate for community groups and faith communities.
Care Shawl Project
Instructors and instructions are available to get you started or just to hang out with you and keep you in stitches. If you are new to this project, you need either knitting needles (size 11 or 13 [beginners will prefer an 11]; can be circular or straight) or size ‘M', ‘N' or ‘P' crochet hook and approx. 555 yards of washable worsted or chunky cotton/poly blend yarn for knitting; a half skein more for crochet. Any age welcome.
 
Paper Slam!

Looking to get out and meet new people while making a difference? Join the Paper Slam! This project is completed at the main office in Durham and involves putting together admission packets for all of the clinical programs.

All volunteers begin with an interview (either on the phone or in person) with a member of our volunteer services staff. Volunteers are asked to complete our volunteer application and make a one-year commitment to our program. Training and orientation specific to each volunteer opportunity are provided at various times throughout the year. Continuing education opportunities are offered to all volunteers as well as regular supervision. Our extensive training and support program helps each volunteer share their talents and give support and compassion to those who need it most. We look forward to having you as part of our interdisciplinary team.

The next Patient/Family Support Training will be on June 18-20.  This trainings will be held at our main office location, 4321 Medical Park Dr., Ste 101, Durham, NC  27704.   Another training will be held in late summer 2010.  Please contact Carolyn Colsher at 919-479-0385, for more information.
